Teaching the Next Generation How to Respond to Evil

Anyone who has lived long enough to be a parent knows that the world is not getting better. Promises of a “brighter tomorrow” or a “better future” are empty. Evil feeds itself and continues to expand. It can be scary and seem hopeless to raise kids in this environment. However, the evil that seems to be closing in on us presents a golden opportunity to speak hope to our children. Rather than filling children’s heads with fanciful notions of “your best life now,” we can redeem the moments by teaching them the truth about themselves and their temporary home.  

The truth about ourselves is that evil not only lurks around us; it is in us. We are born enemies of God with a natural inclination toward evil. When compared to the holy standard of God, we all fall short (Rom. 3:23). The first peace that a child must have, is peace with God made possible through Jesus (Rom. 5:1).  

When a child is at peace with God, he can be taught how to think about the evil in the world. The Bible does not promise us that evil will not touch us, but it does teach us that God is sovereign over evil and uses it to accomplish His will. We can confidently submit ourselves to the care of a loving, powerful God. The evilest act ever committed in history was the crucifixion of the perfect Son of God, but God accomplished His perfect plan of redemption as a result. God’s Word promises us a day when He will defeat evil. It is hard for us to imagine what that will be like. Our finite minds think of the future in terms of what will not be present-no suffering, no sorrow, no death. It is hard for us to grasp what will be in Heaven because sin mars everything good we know on earth. When children are exposed to evil or its effects, we must remind them of God’s plan to end evil. We can show them that evil magnifies the goodness of God. Those who embrace Jesus as Savior will not have to live under the shadow of the curse forever. Instead, Zechariah 3:15 contains the amazing promise that when the Lord, the King of Israel is with us, we will “never again fear evil.” The truth about evil in our world is that we do not have to fear it even now.

When we hear of bomb threats, mass shootings, and other such despicable and terrifying events, it is tempting to seek a safe retreat where evil cannot touch us or those we love. Protecting our children from everything that could harm them is a futile pursuit and leads them away from trusting God. We should, of course, be careful, make plans, and act responsibly, but this longing for peace and security is a gift. It is a restlessness that helps us take refuge in our God and long for our real home in eternity. The next time evil strikes, welcome the moment to glory in a God of whom we can say “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust (Psalm 91:2).

As we celebrate Kansas Day on Thursday, January 29, we remember the early trails that shaped our state and our community. Cowboys, settlers, traders, and travelers all relied on routes like the Chisholm Trail and the Santa Fe Trail as they crossed the Kansas prairie, carrying cattle, wagons, goods, and hopes for the future.

These trails were integral to the founding of our town, bringing life, commerce, and connection to a growing community. Life on the trail required perseverance and faith, and many found reassurance under the wide Kansas sky, trusting God to guide their journey.

Our Kansas Day theme and celebration will honor this rich heritage; recognizing the courage, hard work, and spiritual dependence that helped build Kansas and the community we call home.

Students are welcome to join the fun by dressing up in costumes inspired by the cowboys and the prairie of the time.

Details are still getting lined up, but we will be in need of many parent volunteers! If you will be available that day, please reply to this email or contact Mrs. Alexander at nbcs@newtonbible.org!

We had Honors Chapel this week, and students received awards for Perfect Attendance, Honor Roll, and High Honor Roll in the Second Quarter!

We know many of you pray so fervently for our school, and those prayers do not go unappreciated! These prayer cards are printed and available in the office if you would like to pick one up for you or to share with a prayer warrior you know. Available while cards last.

A packet will be coming home next week with details about our 13th Annual NBCS Fine Arts Competition, taking place on February 13, 2026. Students in 4th–8th grade will have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of categories from music and speech to art and woodworking.

We’re sending this information early so families can look it over before Christmas break and students can begin thinking about potential projects or performances.

Please keep an eye out for the letter and category descriptions in your student’s folder next week!

Parents are always welcome to join the Wednesday morning Chapels at NBCS, but next Wednesday will be a little extra special. Some of our students will be performing Christmas pieces they’ve been working on.

Check with your student to see if they’re performing, and feel free to come listen in if you can. We’d love to have you celebrate the season with us! Chapel starts at 8:45am.

Grandparent's’ Day was so much fun! We enjoyed having our loved ones come and visit the school. The students performed with bells, sang as a choir, and the bands wowed us all! Thanks to all who came!

It will be December 1 when we return from Thanksgiving Break! Here is the December Calendar to help keep up with what is going on next month!

We are just two weeks away from one of our favorite events every year - Grandparents' Day! This event will be held on Friday, December 5.

School will begin at the normal time, but grandparents should arrive by 9:30am. They will enjoy a program in the sanctuary, a band performance and snack in the gym, and special times in the classrooms. The festivities will finish at noon, when all will be dismissed (including students). We love when grandparents join us for a morning at school!

Parents, family friends, and “adopted grandparents” are warmly invited to step into that special role for the day. We would be honored to have you join us and share in the joy, memories, and celebration. Please just RSVP how many we should expect for your family.

The Importance of Parent Engagement

When was the last time you learned something new? I’m not talking about the latest social media gossip or featured news story. When was the last time you read a book on a topic and learned something, or dug into a topic and did some research?

Part of the vision statement for Newton Bible Christian School is that we desire our students to be life-long learners. At school, school staff leads learning. Teachers continually explore and expand their understanding of their subject matter and pedagogy and then endeavor to present the material in a way that is engaging for students, thus motivating them to learn. However, students who learn best are led by parents who are themselves learners. These parents learn alongside their children and lead them by example. They view homework as an opportunity to be excited with their children about their schoolwork. Homework is a window into their children’s school world.

Engaged parents enter wholeheartedly into projects, homework, and memorization, allowing students to do their own work, but cheering them on and investigating the requirements alongside them. These parents ask questions about what students are learning. These are the parents who are reviewing a history lesson and get caught by a fact they did not remember, or who recreate a science experiment because it interests them. These are not parents who drive their children to success, but they motivate them to want to succeed.  

More importantly, these parents are engaged spiritually with their children. Deuteronomy 6 instructs parents in this. First, the parents of Deuteronomy 6 love the LORD with everything in them, and then they fix God’s Word on their hearts; they are learners! Moses instructs parents to teach God’s Word and His works diligently to their children through every aspect of their lives.

Parents whose children are being taught from a Biblical worldview have a wide-open door for conversations with their children about what they are learning. This brings an opportunity to encourage children to hide Truth in their hearts. It is a great responsibility given to parents, and if parents fail to engage with their children on spiritual issues, the Biblical example teaches that in one generation faith will be lost (Judges 2:10).

If we can develop a lifelong love of learning in our students, we can impact future generations through their impact. Engaging with our children takes time, self-sacrifice, energy, intentionality, and thoughtfulness. It requires that parents be students and learners of truth, but the eternal impact on the hearts of our children is worth it all.

Next Friday, November 21 is our last day of classes before Thanksgiving Break! To celebrate, we will partake in a Thanksgiving Feast together!

Mrs. Adams has graciously offered to prepare the feast for all our students and staff again this year!

Students are invited to dress as if they were attending the First Thanksgiving!

Half Day students will stay until 12pm so that they can have time to eat their Thanksgiving meal at school (it’s not as portable as the Corn Dog Lunch!).

Mark your calendars, invite your grandparents, and look for more details to come! We are excited to host some our favorite people on Friday, December 5 for Grandparents' Day!

This is also a half day for students! School will be dismissed at 12pm.

As the holidays approach, many families are in need of basic essentials and gifts. We’re partnering with Hope Women’s Center to share the love of Christ and bring joy to these families this season.

You may bring your gifts or donations to the school office, and we’ll deliver them to Hope Women’s Center in November. If giving by check, please make it payable to “Hope Women’s Center.”

Please turn in all NBCS Christmas Giving Project items before Thanksgiving break! Anything after that can be taken directly to the Hope Women’s Center.

Our Fall Program: Sing a Song of America was an absolute delight from beginning to end! It was evident how hard the cast and crew had worked. The choir was truly exceptional, filling the room with beautiful music!

We are grateful for our directors, Mrs. Melissa Unruh, Mrs. Julie Galliardt, and Mrs. Whitney Adams, whose dedication, creativity, and countless hours of preparation made the entire evening run so smoothly. Their leadership brought out the very best in our students and created a program we will remember with joy.

A huge thank you to everyone who played a part in making the night such a success!

Our Fall Program: Sing a Song of America! will be held at 7:00pm on Thursday, November 13.

Arrival Times:

• 1st–5th Grade: Arrive at 6:45 p.m. and go to their classrooms.

• 6th–8th Grade: Arrive at 6:30 p.m. and meet in the Kindergarten Room to get microphones.

Special Treat!
In lieu of snacks after the program, we’ll be celebrating with a Cereal Breakfast on Friday, November 14! Students may go directly to the gym when they arrive that morning.

Attire:
1st–5th Grade students should wear black pants with a solid red, white, or blue shirt.
They’re also welcome to dress in a themed costume such as a pilgrim, colonist, or pioneer.

We can’t wait to celebrate our country’s songs and history together!

We are excited to announce our NBCS Christmas Giving Project! As the cooler weather approaches and thoughts of the holidays enter our minds, there are many families who cannot afford gifts or even household essentials. Would you partner with us to help Hope Women's Center bless these families?
