Theme Chapel Review with Mrs. Regier
What makes you anxious? Students were asked this question at the beginning of chapel on Wednesday, and their answers were similar to answers adults would give: starting something new, being around people, taking a test, getting sick…. We all face things that make us anxious everyday.
Our theme for this school year, Everything by Prayer, is based on Philippians 4:6-7. These verses are familiar, but they have challenged me in a new way as I have studied them. During chapel, we considered the commands these verses give. The first is, “Do not be anxious about anything.” Not anxious about anything? How is that possible? The end of verse 6 gives the antidote for anxiety. “In everything by prayer…let your requests be made known to God…” All of the things that make us anxious provide an opportunity for us to talk to God about them. How are we able to talk to God? We can talk to God as our Father, in the name of Jesus only if we have trusted Jesus to be our Savior.
Thanksgiving should accompany our requests because God is always good, always loving, always faithful, always worthy of our gratitude. God promises peace to guard our hearts and minds when we submit to Him through prayer. Students were challenged in chapel with one final piece of the “Don’t be anxious” command. Verse 8 tells us how to think. Our anxious thoughts must be replaced with thoughts of what is true, honorable, just, pure, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. The foundation for these thoughts is God’s truth.
“The Bible is truth—a book I can learn. The Holy Spirit is truth—a Person who lives in me to enable me to live what I learn in the Word about Jesus Christ...Jesus Christ the truth can capture the love of my heart. The Bible can instruct my mind, and the Spirit can enable my will to obey the truth of God. Heart, mind, and will can be controlled by truth, and this truth sanctifies us.” (Warren W. Wiersbe. Prayer: Basic Training.)
This week was just one of many chapels students will have on prayer this year. As you interact with them, please ask them what they are learning and how they are using what they learn in their lives. Then pray for us, that as we learn about prayer together, our lifestyle becomes Everything by Prayer.
Next week’s chapel: Student prayer groups led by older students.
